Life...Happens ; Lab Notebooks

Yeah.  Since I started this with good intentions, well lots of stuff has happened.

Maybe someday I'll cover the changes that have occurred, but not here.  Getting back to the technology realms is a pleasure while dealing with Life...Happens.

Life will continue to Happen.  Just got to move on.

Lab Notebooks and Journal Logs

Just a small mention:  Lab Notebooks.  Learned to love them in Chemistry and used them a long time on the job.  Switched to electronic versions over the years.

Unfortunately I don't have a good Personal Wiki yet, so I'm using good old Notepad++ as my Journal Log for different tasks.   YYYY-MM-DD starts an entry.  And then I copy/paste/type/note things therein.  My current 2-month log is over 1200 lines so far. Good old ASCII is reliable, portable.

I tried using OneNote.  Really I did try, so don't tell me about it.  Hate it, just doesn't work the way I think it should.  I do like it's copy/paste putting different media in place.  And maybe I'll upgrade to something similar, but I'm still looking only occasionally for a new Notebook kind of thing.  Not a high priority at the moment.

Evernote?  Some of the same issues as OneNote.  Not room here to discuss.

Shout Out for Notepad++

I have to mention this tool at some point.  It has been a godsend on many projects now since I found it a few years ago.  I've put it on every development or test box I use more than once.

Notepad++

For Windows, Mac, Linux.  Supports many languages right out of the box.

Get it from https://notepad-plus-plus.org/download/

Compare (Diff) PlugIn

I don't use any of the plugins, except for the Compare (Diff) plugin.  Gives you a nice text diff of two files.

Compare does not come with Notepad++, you have to download it separately.  The Readme instructions are a little sparse about installing.  Basically you just put the .DLL (Windows) or other OS files in the Notepad++ plugins/ directory.  e.g. 64-bit Windows it goes in C:\Program Files (x86)\Notepad++\plugins
